Psychics Portrayed in Media

I’m done with hiding how I feel about psychics being portrayed in the media. As a psychic myself, the way the media portrays my sensitivities makes me feel incredibly undervalued. For those of you who have been subscribed to me, you know that this is a large part of my work, that I take very seriously.

If you are a healer, a true psychic, card reader, palm reader, medium, or use your sensitivities to intentionally help others to seek clarity on their path, I understand that your work is important, valuable, and you deserve to be acknowledged for the energy you use to channel messages for those that need a little nudge or guidance.

What people do not understand is that being a psychic is not using a crystal ball to tell your future. I’m not sure I’ve ever met another psychic that actually labeled themselves as a “fortune teller”, either. Additionally, I have never met a reader that wears a scarf wrapped around their head, or has a specific costume they wear when conducting readings. I myself, have in the past dressed up for one gig with a scarf around my head and had the full attire, but I felt like I had to play some character that was completely unauthentic to my work. I, in no shape or form need to wear an outfit to represent some falsely portrayed image that the media wants me to be. There is just too much misrepresentation and misinformation about what psychics are.

The scene in Freakier Friday where Anna and Tess see a psychic.

This especially hit me hard when I went out to theaters to watch Freakier Friday, the sequel of a classic coming of age film from 2003, Freaky Friday, (which throws me straight back to my childhood!) I LIVED for this film, and admired Anna Coleman’s aesthetic and no care attitude. In Freaky Friday, Anna and her mom, Tess Coleman, end up reading a fortune cookie’s fortune in a Chinese restaurant while there’s an earthquake, and they end up switching bodies. There was no psychic in the first film when this scene occurred, but in Freakier Friday, they bump into a psychic where a similar sequence occurs and a parallel story unfolds in the sequel.

The way this psychic was portrayed in Freakier Friday blew my mind. They made her character incredibly dumb and incompetent. She even offered other services including life coaching, reiki, and chakra alignment, but made fun of these modalities. They made her character give donation readings at a Starbucks. I could not believe what I was watching. It was infuriating, quite honestly.

For those of you who have energetic and spiritual sensitivities, and use them to guide others on their journeys, know that using these gifts is not a joke. It can be beautifully fulfilling, but also incredibly draining, if not managed properly. Receiving a reading isn’t supposed to be a comical experience. For the media to continue to portray us like we are just a load of garbage is defeating. However– honestly, I won’t allow these messages to stop me from stepping into what I was meant to fulfill with my own abilities.

If you are a spiritual practitioner or healer, I see you, I appreciate you, and I believe that you have a real purpose. If you are a healer, I’d love to hear your own perspective on this topic as well. Let’s stand up for our own work, together.

xoxo,

Julia <3
